Cordoba City Council has approved a motion to rename the city’s train station ‘Alcalde Julio Anguita’, in homage to the city’s first democratic mayor. The proposal, presented by Hacemos Córdoba, was approved with the votes in favour of PP, PSOE and Hacemos Córdoba, while Vox voted against.

According to the text presented, Julio Anguita is remembered for his contribution to the modernisation of the city and his leadership of the country’s left parties. The motion seeks to recognise his legacy and pay him a well-deserved tribute.

The proposal will be passed to the Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, through Adif, for consideration. If approved, the train station will bear the name ‘Alcalde Julio Anguita’, coinciding with the 45th anniversary of the constitution of the first democratic town councils in Spain after the dictatorship and the fourth anniversary of the death of Julio Anguita González.

The initiative has been defended by PP, PSOE and Hacemos Córdoba parties, who have highlighted the importance of recognising figures such as Anguita in the history and heritage of Córdoba. The proposal was backed by all the votes of the plenary, with the exception of the three votes of Vox.

The green-coloured party tabled an amendment to change the name to Alcaldes Antonio Cruz Conde and Julio Anguita, in homage to the Francoist councillor who held the mayoralty between 1951 and 1962. However, this amendment was rejected.
