French-based manufacturer Alstom has completed the modernisation project of the Stockholm metro fleet. A total of 270 C20 series cars have undergone a complete overhaul in the workshops in Västerås, in a process that began in 2017.
The project has been a logistical and technical challenge. According to the manufacturer, the modernisation has involved 110 operators and 25 engineers, as well as several local subcontractors. The result is a completely renovated series, with a more open and modern interior design, which facilitates passengers’ transit and enhances their travel experience.
The renovation has included the reuse of materials and the upgrading of passenger information systems. In addition, new seats have been installed and the number of security cameras has been increased.
“This project has been of great importance for our operations in Västerås and our local subcontractors. It has allowed us to put the skills and expertise of our workshop to good use,” said Maria Signal Martebo, managing director of Alstom in Sweden.
Alstom’s customer MTR and the network operator SL (Storstockholms Lokaltrafik) were involved in the project.

Alstom is the largest supplier to the Swedish rail market, with more than 1,000 trains delivered to Swedish railways and several large maintenance contracts. Alstom is also leading the implementation of the ERTMS signalling system in the country, both on-board and on-track and supplies the new national traffic management system for the Swedish Transport Administration.
