The Spanish Minister for Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has announced that the Ministry will call an international competition to design the future Central Station of Valencia, unifying the current Nord and Joaquín Sorolla stations.
The competition will be held during the project drafting for these new facilities. The tender documents for this process will be ready before the end of this year. Thus, the new station’s design will follow in the footsteps of Madrid Chamartín and Bilbao Abando, which were chosen through an international competition.
Valencia Central Station will be a thorough station, thanks to the new tunnel built under the city centre. Its extension to Albuixech is being studied to avoid affecting L’Horta, a protected area. This way, trains travelling along the Mediterranean Corridor will enter Valencia faster from the north (saving 10 to 15 minutes) and avoid reversing their journey.
It will be located under the tracks of the current Valencia Nord station and have three levels. Furthermore, it will be designed with the future increase in demand in mind and will be integrated with the Valencia metro network to facilitate intermodality. This way, it will be served by commuter, regional, long distance and high-speed trains, as well as metro and tram services.
