Captrain Italia agrees to lease back with Railpool for 13 locomotives

The operator will sell them but lease them long-term for further use in its freight traffic.

Freight operator Captrain Italia has agreed with Railpool to sell 13 locomotives to the leasing company and then lease them back on a long-term contract—a lease-back operation that allows the railway company to obtain liquidity.

The locomotives belong to Alstom’s TRAXX DC3 family and are equipped with the last mile system.

This agreement will allow Captrain Italia to consolidate its rolling stock strategy, benefitting from a long-term deal that includes complete maintenance by Railpool. The 13 locomotives will be added to the 19 units already leased to Captain by RAILPOOL, with eight of them to be delivered by the second half of 2024.

Mauro Pessano, CEO of Captrain Italy, says:“The partnership with RAILPOOL allows us to move forward expeditiously in our fleet renewal plan, which is almost complete. Our customers will benefit from locomotives with the best performance in terms of traction, reliability and cost. In addition to being able to count on the Last Mile and the best readiness for the upcoming ERTMS implementation.”

Alberto Lacchini, General Manager of RAILPOOL Italy, says: “With this agreement RAILPOOL confirms its commitment to the Italian market, further strengthening its position as the local leading rental company with the largest fleet of Alstom Traxx DC3 Last Mile locomotives in Italy.

Once fully operational, Captrain will benefit from a homogeneous fleet of 32 locomotives managed by RAILPOOL.
